Jamaica has entered a new era of education with the introduction of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) pilot programme in select schools. The initiative, announced by Minister of Education, Skills, Youth & Information, Senator, Dr. the Hon.  Dana Morris Dixon, aims to automate paper marking and enhance real-time student performance tracking — a move that marks a critical milestone in the nation’s digital transformation agenda.

Enhancing Efficiency and Reducing Teacher Burnout

At the heart of the pilot is the goal of using AI to alleviate some of the administrative burdens on educators. By automating the correction of student assessments, teachers can now spend more time on lesson planning, student engagement, and instructional improvement. This effort is particularly timely as the Ministry seeks to improve learning outcomes and better manage classroom demands.

Key Features of the AI Pilot

  • Automated Marking: AI systems will grade papers swiftly and objectively, reducing human error and saving time.

  • Real-Time Analytics: Teachers and administrators gain immediate insights into student progress and learning gaps.

  • Pilot Locations: The initiative is being trialled in selected schools across the island, with scalability in view.

Broader Digital Education Strategy

This AI pilot is part of the Ministry’s wider digital education strategy, which includes:

  • The development of a national AI policy for education.

  • The launch of Jamaica’s first AI lab.

  • Introduction of a Prompt Engineering course through the HEART/NSTA Trust to prepare citizens for AI-integrated careers.

Strengthening the System Through Governance and Innovation

The National Council on Education supports this innovative step as a strategic shift in educational governance. By integrating technology in school systems — particularly in routine but resource-intensive areas like grading — stakeholders can redirect focus toward pedagogical excellence and learner well-being.

This AI-driven initiative not only modernises education but also equips students and teachers with tools to thrive in a data-driven future.
